Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Plan and prepare for geological field assistance
  2. Collect and classify common rocks, ores and minerals
  3. Use geological maps and sections

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

provide geological field assistance on at least two occasions, including:

performing instrument and equipment checks prior to use

collecting and classifying rocks, minerals and ore

conducting basic geological surveying

maintaining recording and reporting systems.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply required documentation, policies and procedures

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for the completion of providing geological field assistance, including:

driving all-terrain vehicles

complying with environmental requirements

work with others to provide geological field assistance that meets required outcomes, including:

identifying and applying communication methods and protocols

communicating and coordinating activities with others.


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key policies, procedures and established requirements for providing geological field assistance, including those for:

sampling and sample identification

safe and correct use of instruments and equipment in the field

geology of rock, ore and mineral deposits

classification of rock, ore and minerals

geometry of geological structures on maps and in the field

company and site policy and procedures regarding geological field work

types and functions of geological instruments and field equipment.
